Can Muslims feed Dogs at Home?

Is it forbidden to keep dogs at home according to Islam?

The question of whether dog breeding is prohibited in Islam is a topic frequently discussed. Dogs are not prohibited in Islam. But some rules must be followed. In the religion of Islam the dog is seen as a blessing. It is not forbidden to use dogs for guarding, hunting or shepherd.

It is forbidden to establish close contact with dogs in Islamic religion. The biggest discussion on this issue is the question of whether dogs are forbidden at home. Sharing the same house with dogs is not the same thing as keeping dogs for various jobs.

Al-Ma’idah 4: ‘’They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, “Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah .” Indeed, Allah is swift in account.’’

People have trained dogs for hunting through history. If the dog were a sin to feed, Ma’idah 4 would not have these expressions about verse hunting.

The video below shows a historical hunting method with dogs :

In homes, cats, birds, fish, such as animals are fed, why the discussion is usually about the dog?

The answer is about the physiology of dogs :

– Dogs have their own bad odors. This odor does not pass through the bath and it sinks to all sides.

– It is common for dogs to eat their own feces.

– Especially, puppies do pee and feces everywhere.

– Large amount of saliva flows from the mouth of dogs. Especially the saliva of large breed dogs constantly flow to places and objects.

– Dog saliva contains extremely dangerous bacteria and germs.

– Dogs’ breath is very bad.

Most people who are not interested in religious matters agree that keeping a dog at home is dirty. Some, in spite of these facts, are accusing the people who are opposed to dog breeding at home with animal hostility.

According to the Qur’an, are the dogs dirty?

Although dogs are defined as pets, they are physically a predator species. It is reported in the Qur’an that it is forbidden to defeat the meats touched by predators. In other words, it is reported that predators are dirty, especially those that contact with their mouths will be contaminated.:

Al-Ma’idah 3: ‘’Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows..….’’

It is forbidden to live dirty in the religion of Islam. The basic rules of Islam in daily life comes from cleaning. Dogs are species of predators and they are not clean. Therefore, it is not Islamic right for dogs and people to live in the same house.

It is torture to keep an animal in the house that needs constant movement like a dog. Every dog owner knows that dogs must routinely take long walks every day.

The only ban on dogs is to keep them at home. Dogs can be used for guarding, shepherd, hunting, companionship. The dog is a loyal animal and his friendship gives people happiness.

In the Qur’an, an example is given in Al-Kahf. It is described as a dog next to the young people hiding in the cave :

Al-Kahf (The cave) 18: And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.”

Dogs have been valuable animals throughout the history of human beings and have provided valuable services. As with everything else, the abduction of the measure of feeding the dog may cause negative results.
